WAU Men's Soccer Bounces Back With a 2-0 Victory Over Pitt-Johnstown

TAKOMA PARK, MD - On September 4, 2023, the WAU men's soccer team (4-1, 0-0) delivered an exceptional performance, clinching a resounding 2-0 victory over the formidable Pitt-Johnstown team. The match showcased the team's tenacity, skill, and unwavering determination to secure a well-deserved win after falling 2-1 to PSU Brandywine over the weekend.

"Great effort from the boys, bouncing back from a disappointing result on Friday," said Head Coach Daniel Carroll. "I am delighted with how we approached the game today. Excuses can be made in exhaustive conditions, but we made none, playing in the heat of the day with two more games this week. The boys played with great discipline and maturity to the right things at the right times to get the job done against a competitive and well-prepared NCAA Division II UPJ team."

Dominant Display in the First Half

From the kick-off, the Shock demonstrated their intent to control the game. They swiftly settled into a rhythm, showcasing excellent ball control and precise passing. Their offensive prowess was evident as they launched a series of relentless attacks on Pitt-Johnstown's defense.

In the 36th minute, WAU's forward, Ben Cooksley, delivered an exceptional strike, sending the ball soaring into the net, assisted by Thijs Velhorst. The goal ignited a sense of jubilation among the team, boosting their confidence and intensifying their drive to secure a comfortable lead.

Solid Defensive Performance

While the attack commanded attention, the defense of the Shock was equally impressive throughout the match. Their backline exhibited remarkable resilience and organization, thwarting any attempts by the Panthers to penetrate their defense. The defenders demonstrated great anticipation and teamwork, denying the opposition any clear-cut opportunities to score.

Goalkeeper's Heroics

In addition to the solid defensive display, WAU's goalkeeper, Gregorio Capponi, played a pivotal role in preserving the team's clean sheet. Capponi pulled off a series of spectacular saves, demonstrating agility, reflexes, and composure under pressure. His outstanding performance provided a solid foundation for the team's victory, saving 4-of-4 shots on goal.

Sealing the Win

The Shock maintained dominance in the second half, consistently pressing and maintaining possession. Their relentless pursuit of a second goal paid off in the 86th minute when midfielder Velhorst unleashed a powerful shot from the edge of the box one-on-one, leaving the Panther's goalkeeper with no chance to save. The goal further cemented WAU's control over the match and effectively sealed their 2-0 victory.

"It was a collective effort," said team captain Aguer Dau. "It was resilience, and more than that, it was teamwork that helped us get the win. If we keep up with this same energy and character traits that we all have, we will do big things this year."

"With a lot of new players coming together for the first time ever, it is amazing to see how much these lads play for each other, " said Carroll. "It is exciting every time we get on the pitch because we're always learning something new. Bring on Gallaudet this Wednesday as we look to continue our winning ways. Go Shock!"
