WAU Men’s Soccer Draws 2-2 with Bridgewater College in Hard-Fought Road Match
Bridgewater, VA – The Washington Adventist University (WAU) men's soccer team earned a 2-2 draw against Bridgewater College on September 18, 2024, in a thrilling road match at Bridgewater's home field.
The game began with the Shock applying early pressure, and they were rewarded with a goal in the 9th minute. After a quick passing sequence, Linus Schomann found the back of the net with a low shot past Bridgewater's goalkeeper, putting the WAU ahead 1-0.
Leaning into the momentum from the early success, the Shock turned up the intensity, and their efforts paid off shortly before halftime. In the 43rd minute, Ben Cooksley capitalized on an assist from Hernandez Molina, calmly slotting the ball home to extend the lead to 2-0. The goal energized the Shock, and they finished the half on the front foot.
The second half started much like the first but in Bridgewater's favor. The home side quickly turned the tables in the 52nd minute when the Eagles scored their first goal, making it 2-1.
WAU refused to back down. The Shock continued to push forward, creating several dangerous chances. However, Bridgewater's persistence paid off in the 66th minute when the Eagles unleashed a powerful shot that sailed past the Shock's goalkeeper to make it 2-2. The stunning strike leveled the score and set up a tense final 24 minutes.
Both teams fought hard in the closing moments of the match, with each side coming close to grabbing a late winner. WAU's defense, held firm under pressure, while Gregorio Capponi made crucial saves to preserve the draw.
Despite some late chances, neither team could find the decisive goal, and the match ended in a 2-2 stalemate.
Schomann and Cooksley were instrumental for WAU, scoring both goals and driving the team forward with their attacking play. Capponi had an impressive performance in goal, making [number of nine key stops to keep the Eagles in the game.
With the draw, WAU's record now stands at 0-2-1. The Shock will look to build on this result when they face Pitt-Johnstown on Wednesday, September 25 as they continue their season with hopes of turning these close matches into victories.
