WAU Women’s Basketball Secures First Win of the Season with 86-37 Victory Over Trinity Washington University
Washington, DC – The Washington Adventist University (WAU) women's basketball team claimed their first victory of the season in a dominant performance against Trinity Washington University, defeating them 86-37 on Thursday, November 7, 2024. The win showcased the Shock's strong teamwork, defensive prowess, and offensive depth, giving them a boost as they continue their early-season play.
WAU set the tone from the outset, jumping to an early 11-0 lead behind Isabela Lujan-Gonzales' impressive scoring and Sanaa Morrow's energy on defense. By halftime, the Shock had established a commanding 44-21 lead, capitalizing on turnovers and executing plays with precision.
In the second half, WAU continued to apply pressure, holding the Tigers to only four third-quarter points and widening the gap with contributions from both starters and bench players. Melanie Aguilar put on an outstanding performance, leading all scorers, while Tye Queen controlled the boards and kept Trinity from generating any sustained momentum.
The Shock shot 55.4 percent (36-of-65) from the field and forced the Tigers into 27 turnovers. Aguilar led the Shock in scoring finishing with 19 points, four rebounds, four assists, one steal, and one block, while Amani Ball followed with 15 points, eight rebounds, and two steals. Lujan-Gonzales contributed 14 points, four assists, and six steals, while Queen recorded her first double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Bethany Fowler recorded an impressive stat line with 12 points, seven rebounds, four steals, three assists, and two blocks, Sanaa Morrow contributed a near triple-double with eight points, nine rebounds, eight assists, and three steals, and Abigail Bryant contributed six points. Seven Shock players saw time on the floor in the 86-37 win.
With the victory, WAU improves to 1-2 on the season. The Shock will look to carry this momentum into their next game in the Bobcat Bash Tournament against Villa Maria on November 9 in Buffalo, NY, eager to continue their strong play and further develop as a team.
