WAU Women’s Basketball Wins Second Straight, Defeats Villa Maria College 83-54 at Bobcat Bash Tournament

Buffalo, NY – The Washington Adventist University (WAU) women's basketball team continued their winning streak on Saturday, November 9, 2024, with a decisive 83-54 victory over Villa Maria College at the Bobcat Bash Tournament, hosted by Bryant & Stratton Buffalo. This win marks the Shock's second consecutive victory, as they showed strength on both ends of the court to improve their season record to 2-2.

WAU set the pace early, using a blend of sharp shooting and solid defense to build a significant lead in the first quarter. Isabela Lujan-Gonzales led the scoring effort, driving the offense with key baskets that helped the Shock take control of the game. By halftime, WAU was firmly in command with a 37-23 lead, thanks to relentless rebounding and forced turnovers.

In the second half, the Shock maintained their intensity, with contributions from Deryanis Colon Velez and Bethany Fowler who added valuable points and defensive stops. Villa Maria attempted to rally but could not overcome WAU's stifling defense and well-coordinated offensive plays. The Shock sealed the game with a final score of 83-54.

The Shock shot 43.8 percent (32-of-73) from the field and forced the Tigers into 28 turnovers. Lujan-Gonzales led the Shock in scoring finishing with 18 points, six assists, and four steals, while Colon Velez and Manie Aguilar followed with 14 points each. Bethanie Fowler contributed a near double-double performance recording 11 points, nine rebounds, two steals, and two blocks.

Tye Queen (10), Abby Bryant (8), Sanaa Morrow (5), and Ariyanna Gross (3) found the scoring column as well. Eight players saw the floor in the victory.

With this win, WAU now looks ahead to their next game, bringing momentum and confidence from their strong performance in game one at the Bobcat Bash Tournament. They aim to continue building on this success as they face the host, Bryant & Stratton Buffalo on Sunday, November 10 at 4 pm.
