WAU Women’s Basketball Falls to Shawnee State
Portsmouth, OH – The Washington Adventist University (WAU) women's basketball team faced a tough challenge on Thursday, November 23, falling to Shawnee State University 77-32 in Portsmouth, Ohio.
The Shock struggled to find their offensive rhythm against the Bears' strong defense. Shawnee State jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter, showcasing its depth and scoring efficiency. By halftime, the Bears held a commanding advantage, leading 35-22.
Despite the deficit, WAU continued to battle, with Deryanis Colon Velez leading the Shock in scoring with 12 and contributing defensively with seven rebounds and three steals. However, Shawnee State maintained control throughout the second half, using a combination of fast breaks and sharp perimeter shooting to extend their lead.
The Shock shot 22 percent (11-of-50) from the field, with two of its makes coming from long range. Colon led the Shock in scoring finishing with 12 points, while Abby Bryant followed with 7 points and seven.
Tye Queen (5), Sanaa Morrow (4), Isabela Lujan-Gonzales (2), and Ariyanna Gross (2) also found the scoring column. Eight Shock players saw time on the floor.
The loss moves the Shock to a 4-5 on the season. WAU head coach Jered Lyons acknowledged the challenges of the matchup but emphasized the team's determination to improve.
The Shock will look to regroup as they prepare for their next game in Portsmouth, OH, against West Virginia Tech on Sunday, November 24.
