The game opened with both teams playing strong defense, limiting scoring opportunities and forcing turnovers. WAU took the lead in the second quarter, with Bethany Fowler leading the Shock's offense, hitting crucial shots, and Deryanis Colon Velez leading the Shock's defense, nabbing three steals to keep the team within reach. However, the Ambassadors capitalized on key turnovers and went on a 7-0 run to shift the momentum in their favor. By halftime, Oakwood held a comfortable 35-21 lead, setting the stage for a close second half.
In the second half, WAU's defense continued to challenge Oakwood, forcing contested shots and creating fast-break opportunities. Amani Ball provided a much-needed spark, dominating the paint to keep the Shock neck-and-neck with Oakwood. The Shock outscored the Ambassadors 26-15 in the third quarter.
In the final minutes, Oakwood managed to maintain the narrow lead, capitalizing on free throws and a few costly turnovers by WAU. Despite a last push from the Shock, Oakwood held firm, closing out the game 64-61. WAU's resilience and determination were evident, but they fell just short of clinching the win.
WAU was led by Ball who tallied 19 points and twelve rebounds, while Fowler contributed a strong performance on both ends of the court with 11 points, seven rebounds, five steals, one assist, and one block.
Although the Shock came up short in the win column, the team displayed resilience and determination, embodying the spirit of WAU athletics. The Homecoming celebration also featured a halftime performance by the Acro-Airs, led by Interim Head Coach Delonte Bruce, and a special recognition of WAU alumni making an impact in the community.
"We got better tonight," said head coach Jered Lyons. "It didn't result in the win, but it's equipping us for the journey ahead. Thank you to all of the alumni that came out tonight. We appreciate you all."
The loss moves the Shock to 5-7, but the team remains focused as they prepare for their next game hosting Cheyney University on Monday, January 6.
