WAU Women’s Basketball Triumphs Over Spartanburg Methodist in CAC Classic
SPARTANBURG, SC – The Washington Adventist University women's basketball team showcased resilience and determination in an 80-73 overtime victory over Spartanburg Methodist on Saturday, January 25, at Bridges Arena during the Spartanburg CAC Classic.
The Shock delivered an impressive performance, led by guard Isabela Lujan-Gonzales, who posted a team-high 25 points. Her leadership on the court was complemented by forward Amani Ball, who recorded another dominant double-double with 18 points and 17 rebounds.
Spartanburg Methodist challenged WAU throughout the game, utilizing a fast-paced offense that kept the score within reach. The Shock led by just seven points, 56-49, entering the final quarter. The Pioneers outscored WAU 18-11 to send the game into overtime.
Deryanis Colon Velez and Ball dominated the boards, posting 31 of the Shock's 56 rebounds, securing the extra possessions for WAU. Their presence inside proved pivotal as the Shock outscored Spartanburg Methodist 13-6 in the overtime period. Bethany Fowler added 9 points, seven rebounds, and secured two back-to-back steals and fast-break lay-ups in overtime to help seal the win.
The Shock shot 43.6 percent (34-of-78) from outrebounded the Pioneers 56-42. Along with Lujan-Gonzales and Ball, Tye Queen (17), Bethany Fowler (9), Colon Velez (6), and Sanaa Morrow (5) found the scoring column as well. Seven players saw the floor in the victory.
The victory marks another strong outing for the Shock in CAC play. They continue to build momentum heading into the latter half of their season. They will return home to face Virginia University Lynchburg on Thursday, January 30, in Takoma Park, MD, at the Pitt.
