WAU Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Cheyney University 3-0 in Home Opener
Takoma Park, MD – The Washington Adventist University (WAU) women's volleyball team started their 2024 season in style, securing a dominant 3-0 victory over Cheyney University in front of an enthusiastic home crowd last night, on September 5, 2024. The Shock were in complete control from the first serve to the final point, making a strong statement in their home opener at Pitt and marking the first career victory for Coach Anastasia Allen, who finished her WAU volleyball career in 2022.
"Volleyball is back," said Coach Allen as she joyously celebrated with her team. "It felt good to be on the other side not playing, but in spirit, I felt like I was playing. For us, the energy and passion were present tonight, and it's just the beginning."
WAU came out with energy and determination, setting the tone early in the first set. Led by captain Samiah Gross and a balanced offensive attack, Gross went on a personal 16-0 serving streak before the Wolves got on the board due to a server's error. The Shock quickly established a lead and never looked back, winning the opening set 25-6.
In the second set, WAU's defense stepped up, with Ashley Green and Candace Cabansag delivering key blocks and Cabansag anchoring the backline with impressive digs. The Shock's aggressive serves kept Cheyney off balance, allowing WAU to take the second set comfortably 25-13.
The third and final set saw Cheyney make a brief run, but WAU's composure and teamwork prevailed. Lynell White sealed the match with a string of powerful serves and well-placed sets, helping the Shock finish the set 25-21 and complete the 3-0 sweep.
Samiah Gross led the team with ten kills on fourteen attacks and eight server aces, while setter White orchestrated the offense, tallying sixteen assists and eight server aces. Ariyanna Gross made her mark in her WAU debut with seven kills, while Cabansag contributed with eight digs and four solo blocks. Green was also a force at the net with two solo blocks. The entire team displayed exceptional communication and execution, showcasing the hard work they put in during preseason.
"Our girls did amazing," said coach Allen. "Tonight, we played together. We had the momentum from start to finish, and from there, we will continue to perfect our craft."
The victory marks a positive start to the Shock's home schedule, giving the team momentum as they progress in their season. With a mix of veteran leadership and rising stars, WAU is looking to build on this win as they prepare for their next match.
WAU will continue its season with another home contest against Penn State Shenango on Sunday, September 8. The Shock will aim to carry the confidence from this win into their upcoming games as they strive for success in their conference.
