WAU Women’s Volleyball Defeats Penn State Shenango 3-1, Extends Record to 2-0

Takoma Park, MD – The Washington Adventist University (WAU) women's volleyball team continued their strong start to the 2024 season, securing a 3-1 victory over Penn State Shenango on the afternoon of September 10 in their second home game of the year. With this win, the Shock improved to 2-0, maintaining their unbeaten record as they built momentum early in the season.

WAU came out strong in the first set, displaying sharp communication and precise execution. The Shock controlled the tempo from the start, taking the opening set 25-14. Their aggressive serving and effective blocking left Penn State Shenango struggling to gain rhythm.

The second set saw a more resilient effort from the Nittany Lions, who challenged WAU with quick attacks and better defensive play. However, WAU maintained their composure and, after several back-and-forth exchanges, pulled away with a 25-19 victory to go up 2-0.

In the third set, Penn State Shenango found their footing and took advantage of several WAU errors, winning 25-18 to get on the scoreboard. Despite the loss of momentum, the Shock regrouped in the fourth set with renewed energy and determination. WAU's defense, led by Candance Kapualani Cabansag, clamped down, while Ariyanna Gross and Samiah Gross delivered a series of crucial kills. The Shock dominated the fourth set, winning 25-21 to secure the 3-1 overall victory.

Veteran Lynell White was once again a standout performer, leading the team as the best all-around performer with five kills, eight assists, and two aces, including the game-winning point.

"Not having a season last year was tough," said White. "Winning 2-0 this year feels so good. It feels so good to be back. As we prepare for the next phase of our season, we're going to keep our energy up and keep going. Let's go Shock!"

Freshman Jordyn Stafford orchestrated the offense with precision, recording thirteen assists and two blocks, while Deryanis Colon-Velez and Chanel Schmidt anchored the defense. The team's balance between offense and defense proved to be the key factor in their win.

"Today's game was great," said Coach Anastasia Allen. "We had to face adversity, losing the third set, however, the team responded the right way. I am very proud of this group. We're on a 2-0 win streak, and we're looking forward to keeping it going."

With their home opener victories over Cheyney University and now Penn State Shenango, WAU has made a confident start to the season. After the postponement of their next match, facing Anne Arundel Community College, the Shock will next face Notre Dame Maryland on Tuesday, September 20, looking to extend their unbeaten streak.
