WAU Women's Soccer Defeats Penn State Schuylkill 3-1 in Season Opener

TAKOMA PARK, MD - On September 6, 2023, the WAU women's soccer team (1-0, 1-0) achieved a remarkable 3-1 victory against their CAC conference mate, Penn State Schuylkill (1-1, 0-1). With impressive skill and determination, the Shock showcased their prowess on the pitch and proved their mettle as a force to be reckoned with in collegiate soccer.

The match took place in the picturesque Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, lending a scenic backdrop to the intense competition. As expectations ran high before kickoff, both teams had their sights set on securing a crucial win in the season's early stages.

From the initial whistle, the Shock took control of the game, swiftly asserting their dominance over the Nittany Lions. The team's offense displayed a relentless attacking style, with seamless passes and a flurry of shots on goal that kept the Penn State Schuylkill defense on their toes throughout the contest.

Leading the charge for WAU was their standout forward, Katharina Blume. With exceptional speed and technical ability, Blume was a constant threat to the Nittany Lion's defense. In the 33rd minute, she showcased her clinical finishing skills, slotting the ball past the opposing goalkeeper, assisted by Keily Lazo, to give her team a well-deserved 1-0 lead going into halftime.

The second goal injected even more vigor into the Shock as they continued creating opportunities and dominating possession. Blume dictated the play, scoring her second goal in the 63rd minute.

In the 85th minute, after sustained pressure from WAU, Nia Laureano weaved her way through the Penn State Schuylkill defense, unleashing a powerful shot that found the back of the net. The team celebrated their third goal in jubilation, knowing they were one step closer to securing an impressive victory.

However, Penn State Schuylkill was not ready to back down just yet. The home team retaliated with a goal of their own in the 89th minute, pushing the Shock to stay focused and resolute in defense.

The final whistle marked a resounding 3-1 victory for the Shock, echoing their dominance and emphasizing their potential for the season. Coach Krista Byrd Rodriguez praised her team's collective effort and highlighted the invaluable contributions of each player.

The triumph against Penn State Schuylkill was a testament to the WAU women's soccer team's dedication and hard work. As they revel in this well-earned victory, the team will undoubtedly look to build upon their strong start and continue to make waves in their conference and beyond.
