Shock Rolls Past Oakwood in Season-Opening Road Win

Huntsville, Ala. — The Washington Adventist Shock Men opened their 2025-26 season on a high note Saturday night in a 98-83 road victory over Oakwood Ambassadors in Huntsville.

From the tip, the Shock established their intent. Senior guard Derrick Jones Jr. knocked down a free throw for the first points of the game, then teammate Joey Brown IV followed with a driving lay-in to give WAU an early edge. A pair of long-range shots by Chase Cook soon had the visitors up 10-4 and forced Oakwood into early adjustments.

The Shock stretched their lead behind strong performances in the paint from Anthony Perry and Brown, along with timely outside shooting. Cook's rhythm from deep and Jones's finishing at the rim helped WAU carry a 48-41 lead into the locker room.

In the second half, the Shock took control. Brown found King for a jumper on the opening possession, Jones knocked in a corner three, and Perry thundered home a dunk to spark a 12-2 run that put the Shock firmly ahead. The margin continued to grow as Porter and McGhee came off the bench to feed the momentum with rebounds, put-backs, and floor-burning hustle. Despite Oakwood's late attempts to fight back, WAU responded each time, keeping the Ambassadors at arm's length.

Jones finished the night with a team-high 31 points that included multiple three-pointers; Brown filled the stat line with scoring, boards, and steals; and Cook's shooting punctuated the road win. Perry anchored the defense with blocks and an imposing presence in the paint; Porter's bench burst added valuable bench depth.

Derrick Jones Jr. was named Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Defensive Player of the Week following his performance. Jones recorded a double-double, scoring 17 points and grabbing 12 rebounds, with 10 of those boards coming on the defensive end. His intensity and leadership anchored the Shock defense, limiting Oakwood's second-chance opportunities and fueling WAU's transition offense.

"It's always good to come to Oakwood and get a win," said WAU Head Coach Jerry McFarland. "They are going to play hard at all times. Coach Jacob does a good job of getting his guys ready to play. Whenever you win a game against another NAIA team, it's a good thing. This is a special game because it's bigger than basketball. People remember these games each year; the Christian fellowship is remarkable."
